How to Fix a Noisy Washing Machine

Do you have a noisy washing machine?

Did you know that it can turn into a very costly washer repair if you choose to ignore that noise?

The noise can be caused by minor problems such as faulty parts that, if ignored, can develop into major problems. So, what are those parts that can make your washing machine noisy?

Drum bearings

A common cause of noise in washing machines is when water finds its way into the drum bearings. To check for this, first turn off your washing machine and shut off the water supply. Unscrew the back end using a screwdriver. You can use your manufacturer’s manual to locate the drive belt. Remove the belt, then use your hands to spin the drum. If you hear a grinding sound, your drum bearings have a problem and need replacement. If it sounds squeaky, then you simply need to use a mechanical grease to lubricate the bearing.

The feet

That noise can be due to an unbalanced machine. Make sure that the feet have a firm contact with the floor. To adjust them, you need to first undo the locking nuts, then unscrew the feet. Keep adjusting the feet until the washing machine becomes completely level. Use a spirit level to ensure accuracy. Once done, remember to screw back the locking nuts.

Tub bearing

This is mounted in the outer tub – at the middle of the clothes washer. It helps to ensure that the inner tub spins smoothly. Replacing it is an involving affair that will require a lot of disassembling. In case it is faulty, you should consider replacing the bearing plus the outer tub as an assembly.

Drive pulley

The drive pulley is the one on which the belt rides on so as to spin the tub of your laundry washer. It can either be made of metal or plastic. To inspect the drive pulley, you will need to open up the washer and check if the pulley is cracked, bent, lose or worn out. In case it is defective or damaged, get it quickly replaced.

Motor coupling

This coupling connects the transmission to the motor of the machine. It can bring out a loud noise if it is defective. It is made of plastic and can break in case of an overload on the washing machine. Most people find it easy to repair a faulty motor coupling.

Washing Machine Clutch

The clutch connects the transmission to the inner wash tub. It allows the machine to gradually get to its proper spin RPM. In case it has any defects, it can make a loud noise as the washing machine spins. If this is the case, you need to remove and replace it.

You can save a lot of time and money if you check your machine as soon as it starts becoming noisy. If the above parts are okay, you may also need to check the drain pump, shock absorbers, suspension springs and agitator cogs. Simply fixing or replacing these parts can help get rid of the noise. It can help you regain your much needed peace of mind when doing your laundry.
