How To Fix A Refrigerator Light That’s Not Working

The refrigerator light is a vital part of the appliance because it allows you see the interiors and contents. If the light is flickering or not working, it is important that you check several parts including the switch, sockets, and the light bulb itself. The light not working properly is a minor problem and can be addressed without technical help. However, if the simple troubleshooting tips mentioned in the article don’t help, it is best to call a qualified technician.

The Refrigerator Light

Check the Current

In most cases, the refrigerator light does not work because there is no running current. You can start by checking whether the plug is connected properly to the power source. At times, the plug is pulled out from the power outlet which stops power supply to the refrigerator. If this is causing the problem, just reconnect the plug to the power source and the problem will be solved.

If the fuse is blown, it can prevent the refrigerator light from working. Check the circuit breaker or fuse box that controls the flow of power to the machine. If the fuse is damaged or blown, replace it with a new one. If the fuse is working properly, use a voltmeter to check the power flow to the circuit.

If the fuse is not blown and the fridge is plugged in properly, then you must check the condition of the electrical cord. You will need an ohmmeter to check the condition of electrical cord. Since checking the electrical cord requires you to check live wires, it is best to approach a qualified technician to solve this problem.

Light Bulb

If the bulb or lamp is broken or damaged, it can be checked visually. If you notice broken filaments in the bulb, replace it immediately. If there are no visible signs of damage, you can use the multi-meter to check its continuity. An extended period of usage can damage the bulb or damage the socket, so make sure you check them carefully.

If you are planning to get a new bulb for your refrigeration repair, make sure to get one that matches the bulb used in the refrigerator. It is a good idea to take the old bulb to the store when buying a new bulb.

Sockets

If the power supply to the light is available and the bulb is not defective, you should next inspect the light socket. Check for signs of damage to the terminals which can prevent good power connectivity to the lamp or bulb. Since the socket is a live voltage circuit, you must cut off the power supply before inspecting the socket.

Door Light Switch

The interior light of the fridge is controlled by a switch that activates when the door opens and closes. If there is a problem with the switch, the light may not turn on when you open the fridge. The location of the switch will vary depending on the brand and model. Usually, the switch is located near the top of the door opening. Since the switch is mounted on a plastic liner, you should remove the switch carefully to prevent damage to the lining. It is a spring loaded closed type switch which means that there is no continuity when the light switch is depressed.
